On April 20, the SYSU “Wanglaoji Cup” Persons of the Year 2013 Selection Conference was held on East Campus. Yan Guangmei, Vice President of SYSU, and Mi Qi, Deputy Secretary of Guangzhou Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Deputy General Manager of the Financial Center of Guangzhou Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., attended the event.

22 candidates gave a presentation one by one. Some of them have excellent academic performances; some make outstanding achievements in scientific research; some are public-spirited; and some show respect and filial piety –– they demonstrate the demeanors of SYSU students. The selection conference adopted the interactive form of comments by student judges and live microblogging. The students said they want to learn from the candidates in their comments and microblog posts.

9 students including Chen Jingwen and the team “Justice” from School of Law were awarded SYSU “Wanglaoji Cup” Persons of the Year 2013; 11 students including Chen Bin and 1 student team from School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering won the nomination award. Guests from Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings Limited and six organizing units of SYSU jointly selected Qiao Yixing from International Business School as winner of the “Most Influential Person Award”; online voting selected Chen Jingwen from School of International Studies as winner of the “Most Popular Online Award”.

The selection activity of SYSU Persons of the Year has been successfully held for five times since 2009. It is usually launched at the end of a year and lasts for more than four months. Through the process of application by students, review and recommendation by schools and departments, examination and appraisal by the expert panel, public scrutiny of candidates, online voting and on-site voting at the selection conference, 10 Persons of the Year and 10 nominations for Persons of the Year are selected.

Leaders from the six organizing units of the event including Student Affairs Department of SYSU Party Committee, Graduate Student Affairs Department, Publicity Department, SYSU Youth Association, Career Development Counseling Center, and Mental Health Education & Counseling Center; deputy secretaries and student counselors of the schools and departments; representatives of previous Persons of the Year winners; and 370 student judges from 37 schools and departments participated in the selection activity.
