Vice-Chancellor & President of Queensland University of Technology Visited SYSU

On the morning of November 13, 2018, Professor Margaret Sheil, Vice-Chancellor & President of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Members of the QUT delegation also included Professor Scott Sheppard, Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice President, International & Development; Professor Gordon Wyeth, Executive Dean, Science & Engineering Faculty; and Ms. Tze Ay Chuah, Executive Director, QUT International.

Professor Xiao Haipeng, Vice President of SYSU, met with the guests in Grant Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. Representatives from Guanghua School of Stomatology, School of Atmospheric Sciences, School of Data and Computer Science, Office of Scientific Research, and Office of International Cooperation & Exchange also attended the meeting.

Vice President Xiao Haipeng extended a warm welcome to the guests, and introduced SYSU’s history, campus development, advantageous disciplines and big research platforms. He pointed out that since 2009, SYSU and QUT have conducted collaborations in faculty and student exchanges and research projects. He hoped that the two universities would deepen cooperation, and expand opportunities of cooperation in their respective advantageous fields.

Vice-Chancellor & President Margaret Sheil said that she was impressed by SYSU’s rapid development recently. The two universities have a good history of cooperation in business. In recent years, with the support of Guangdong Science and Technology Department, the two universities have achieved substantial results in cooperative research in the fields of air quality, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, information and software. She expressed the hope to explore cooperation in big data, health sciences and engineering, etc.

After the meeting, Vice President Xiao Haipeng and Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice President Scott Sheppard renewed the memorandum of cooperation between SYSU and QUT. During the meeting, the two sides also held a collaboration meeting in which experts reviewed and reported on existing cooperative projects, and discussed future plans for cooperation.

Established in 1989, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a renowned university in Australia. Its advantageous disciplines include business, information technology, education and law. Professor Margaret Sheil was appointed as Vice-Chancellor and President of QUT from February 2018, and this is her first visit to SYSU. The exchanges between the two universities started in early 2009. SYSU’s Lingnan College and QUT Business School signed an agreement to conduct joint undergraduate program and exchange student program. In 2011, the cooperation was promoted to the university level, and the two sides signed a university-level agreement on student exchange. In 2013, SYSU and QUT signed a university-level memorandum of cooperation, and conducted collaborations in many fields in the humanities, social sciences, medical sciences, natural sciences and engineering.
