The 2011-2012 Advanced Collective & Outstanding Student Commendation Assembly was held in the K .K. Leung Hall on south campus in the afternoon on November 23. SYSU President Xu Ningsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng, distinguished guests and delegates of the donation units, leaders of functional departments at SYSU and the award-winning students, a total of over 1,000 individuals attended the assembly. The assembly was presided over by Deputy Secretary Zhu Kongjun.

On behalf of the University, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng conveyed warm congratulations to the advanced collectives and outstanding students, and extended warm welcome and sincere gratitude to the donation units. He pointed out that a first class university must have first class students, and SYSU aims to cultivate talents with aspirations and charisma. He also expressed his hope for the students. Firstly, they should concentrate on studies because sincerity brings about success. Secondly, they should develop an international perspective, take part in academic exchanges, be exposed to different languages and cultures, and interact with people from all over the world. Thirdly, they should care about others, care about the society, continue the humanistic tradition of SYSU, and gain happiness from their work, contribution, creation and their love and care for the society and others.
Deputy Secretary Zhu Kongjun announced the commendation decision. President Xu Ningsheng presented the award of Model Class with Excellent Study Style. Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng presented the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award and the Outstanding Graduate Student Award. The distinguished guests presented awards to 188 recipients of 28 donation scholarships.
Zhang Shiyang from the Department of Chinese made a speech on behalf of the award-winning students. She expressed her gratitude to the alma mater and the teachers, and used her own experience to illustrate that SYSU students should not only possess special knowledge, skills and abilities but also have humanistic sensibility and the courage to take on important tasks, and pay attention to people’s livelihood to repay the society. Professor Chen Ruzhu, President of the Guangdong Ke Lin Medical Education Fund, addressed the assembly on behalf of the donation units. He congratulated the award-winning students and hoped that they would cherish the opportunity of scholarship, perfect their character, keep a grateful heart, and pass on love and kindness.
