On March 2, the Guangdong Provincial High-Quality Development Forum on Ophthalmology was held at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of Sun Yat-sen University.

Liu Liqun, director of the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission, expressed the hope that ZOC would continue leading the field by enhancing quality control systems, empowering grassroots healthcare, and driving innovation.

Lin Haotian, director of ZOC and president of the hospital, noted that 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the center. "By leveraging regional partnerships, building close-knit medical consortiums, and pioneering the 'mobile clinic + mobile operating room' model, we aim to establish a world-class ophthalmic hub and advance China's healthcare infrastructure goals," Lin remarked.

At the opening ceremony of the conference, the Guangdong Provincial Ophthalmic Medical Quality Control Training Base was officially established. During the forum, ophthalmology experts and scholars from inside and outside the province engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges on ophthalmic medical quality control standards and deepening international medical cooperation.

Since 2015, the center has spearheaded breakthroughs in AI-driven diagnostics, mobile healthcare, and international partnerships. In June 2023, it deployed China's first 5G-enabled intelligent ophthalmic screening vehicle, followed by a nationwide rollout of the "mobile clinic + mobile operating room" model in 2024.

The mobile operating room, modified from a standard-sized shipping container, meets the conditions for performing ophthalmic surgeries. It boasts strong mobility, wide coverage, high resource utilization efficiency, adaptability, and flexibility, making it a new model for ophthalmic surgical treatment.

Maldivian healthcare workers are receiving training at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center.

Ms Nafeesa Abdul Latheef, an ophthalmologist from the Maldives who trained at the center, praised the initiative. "This is my second visit to Guangzhou and to ZOC for training. Guangzhou is quite a beautiful city. ZOC is extremely high-tech in their work. The training provided by them is quite useful to us," she shared.

She noted that mobile diagnostic vehicles and operating rooms are very convenient for island countries like the Maldives, which has a sparse population and is surrounded by sea, as they can be placed on ships or in ports to provide medical services to islanders.

In December 2024, the center donated its self-developed AI-powered digital slit lamp to the China-Maldives Ophthalmic Center. The device can generate diagnostic reports and treatment recommendations within one minute after uploading patient scans.

Moving forward, ZOC plans to collaborate with global governments and institutions to establish an international hub for intelligent ophthalmic screening technologies. It aims to serve countries along the "Belt and Road" and deliver China's high-quality ophthalmic medical resources to countries and regions participating in the Initiative.
