Recently, the organ transplant team at The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University has successfully performed the world’s first domino extracorporeal liver therapy on a patient with end-stage liver failure who also had contraindications for liver transplantation. This breakthrough helped the patient survive the critical period of liver failure and subsequently facilitated a successful liver transplant.
This technique utilizes non-transplantable but functional donor livers for extracorporeal treatment, connecting them to the circulatory system of patients with liver failure. Through the efforts of Prof. He Xiaoshun’s team, the procedure has shown remarkable results, with the patient making a full recovery.
This groundbreaking advancement enhances organ utilization and breaks through the limitations of artificial liver support. It not only offers a more effective solution for liver failure treatment but also highlights the potential of organ medicine.
